Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Famous Footwear.
Assistant Manager
The interview process was smooth and comfortable. There were general customer service questions, and it felt like the hiring manager genuinely wanted to know more about my approach to work rather than just rushing through the process as I’ve experienced elsewhere. It helps to have retail experience.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded customer expectations and went above and beyond your usual duties?
Assistant Manager
I applied online for the Assistant Manager job at Famous Footwear. The first step was a long personality test. A store manager reached out to me about a year ago for this role, but I couldn't take it then. I reapplied when I saw it posted again, but heard nothing back for six months. Then, I was contacted to do more tests and set up an interview. The store manager acted as a recruiter and asked me some initial questions, then scheduled an interview. The interview time was changed on the day of, and I had to travel an hour to get there. The interview was very casual with standard retail questions. The manager didn't seem to value my past retail and leadership experience. I realized they post jobs online without intending to hire, just to build a candidate pool. The interview seemed to go okay, and the manager said he'd talk to me again in a week. The following week, he said he was too busy but would let me know when he could fit me in, implying it might not be for the original role or location. He said he'd contact me in two weeks, but never did. I found the whole process unprofessional and felt my time and experience weren't valued. I eventually got hired elsewhere for an office job at a higher pay, where my experience was highly valued.
- Can you describe a time you dealt with an unhappy customer?
Assistant Manager
First, you gotta do all the online paperwork, which is pretty easy. Then, they'll send you a link for an online interview. You gotta do it right away, it's mandatory! The questions are simple, but the online setup is a bit trickier than talking to someone in person. After that, they'll call you in for a proper interview, and they'll get back to you in a few days.
- What's your approach to handling challenging customers?
- How would you handle a situation where you suspect shoplifting?
- Could you share your reasons for leaving your previous role?
