First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Fair Trade USA.
Marketing
It was a pretty fair process. It started with a recruiter phone screen, then a hiring manager interview, and then maybe an assignment and a panel interview. I didn't make it to the hiring manager round though. The recruiter was good about answering questions, and you could ask her if you were moving on and she'd let you know.

Partnership Development Manager
I had an initial call, then they gave me this huge sample project that took like 30 hours to finish, and I even had to record myself presenting it. After all that, they moved me to the final interview round and then called to say I didn't have 'retail experience,' which they totally could have seen on my resume. Five interviews total, and then one rejection call. Super frustrating, unprofessional, and just unnecessary. I guess since it's a non-profit, they try to look busy by interviewing people they don't plan to hire.
- How do you approach a food manufacturer who isn't interested in fair trade certification?
Certification Specialist
The interview process had two parts. The first was a laid-back chat about the company and some basic stuff. The second interview was more about checking my knowledge and how I'd handle situations. Overall, it was a really good and professional experience. The interviewers were nice and made it easy and informative.
- Can you share an instance where you had to rapidly adjust to a process change or a new system? What actions did you take to make sure it went smoothly?
Business Development Manager
The application was easy, done online via their website with a resume and a couple of screening questions. I got an initial interview with HR within a week. It was a good general interview about the company, and they were really open about salary, bonus, and benefits, which made me feel good about continuing. Then I met with the hiring manager, who's the head of Commercial. She was great, very thorough and dynamic. After that, I had a series of virtual interviews with potential colleagues from the Commercial team and other teams. Everyone was really warm, friendly, and motivated. It was a very thorough process, and overall a good experience. Happy to have gotten an offer!
