I got a call from the company HR, and after sharing basic details, my CV was forwarded to the next step. The HR was very polite and kept me updated on everything. They had a requirement for API testing, but they shortlisted my CV based on my Selenium + Java knowledge. After the HR screening, the interview was scheduled three days later. I received a Zoom meeting invite for the interview. First, the HR introduced the interviewer as the project lead. The interviewer and HR were very friendly. They mentioned their requirement for API testing, which they didn't inform me about during the CV shortlisting. Later, the interviewer also said that I have very good knowledge of Selenium and Java, but they needed someone who had worked on APIs.

I applied online and got contacted via LinkedIn for a quick 15 minute phone call. After that, I went to their New York office for an in-person interview. I met everyone on the team there, which was about 7 people. It was a really nice chat, not as intense as some other interviews can be.

Had a quick phone chat first, just about my resume, then an in-person with the company founders. They really dug into my resume to make sure I was being truthful about my skills. They seemed super enthusiastic about the company and their work, and really positive about new hires growing their careers there. It was cool to talk to the C-level execs and ask them questions.

I applied online, and the whole process took a bit over a week, needing a nudge to get the first interview. The interviewer, despite having plenty of ways to check me out online and professionally, seemed not to have done so. He fired off rapid-fire questions about my OAuth 2.0 experience that were pretty basic or just not well-put. Many questions had answers like 'it depends on hypothetical business needs' or 'technically yes, but often no,' which he didn't seem to appreciate. I think he expected simple answers and got annoyed when I explained the nuances. It felt like he thought I was BS-ing. The main takeaway is to expect direct, abrasive questions, especially from East Coast interviewers, who value confidence through competence. Instead of trying to be nice and explain, I should have pushed back on his poorly formed questions, maybe by saying 'Ask bad questions, get bad answers' or pointing out that his questions were too broad to make sense. I'm saying 'no' to the offer, not because I wasn't qualified, but because I decided I don't want to work in that kind of environment.
