I had a pretty disappointing interview experience with Expensify, going through several rounds. The first with HR was okay but focused too much on personal life goals instead of job-related ones. Then came a lengthy take-home technical test. After that, I had a review of the challenge with some basic technical questions, surprisingly easy for the role's level. The last interview, with a director, was also heavily focused on my long-term personal plans. While they want cultural fit, focusing so much on personal life plans felt off. Communication from HR was also spotty, with unanswered emails and questions despite promises. The whole thing felt drawn out, tough, and unclear until the very end what they were really assessing.

The process was quick and smooth. I sent a letter to the company and heard back from an employee who set up a call for the following week. I got a response quickly, even though it was a rejection.

Applied via email by answering questions on the job posting. Got an email about a week and a half later for a Zoom call. The call went pretty smoothly. Interviewer asked about my previous projects, my favorite project, what programming languages I'm most comfortable with, and why I want to work at Expensify. Got rejected the same day with a generic response. I'd suggest that hiring management improve how they list the position online, especially the tech stack. They list 6 languages but only JS & PHP are mainly used. They should narrow down requirements to better reflect the title and make a real effort to bridge the gap for minorities in tech.
