Behavioral Presentation

I was recommended for an interview by a recruiter. I had two great interviews with the CEO, CFO, and the person leaving the role. We ultimately couldn't agree on terms for the position for various reasons, so we decided to part ways. During my brief time there, I really appreciated how open the CEO and CFO were. They answered my questions about the job and the company culture honestly, and even talked about challenges they've faced and how they've worked to fix them. It reminded me of their blog posts about a team dedicated to creating the best environment and product, acknowledging past mistakes without dwelling on them. The woman departing the role also mentioned how enjoyable the company is and how supportive the team is. We were all bummed we couldn't make it work right now, but I left our meetings feeling like they're a really genuine group of people focused on making work enjoyable, prioritizing what matters, and delivering top-notch products for their customers.

It started off with the usual administrative-type questions, like what you like about your job and how many people you support. Then it got uncomfortable and disappointing. The recruiter seemed to have a bias against women who are not in their 20s or 30s. She didn't seem interested in my work experience once we discussed it. She seemed more focused on making me feel bad because my current company didn't have elaborate parties (she quickly compared events). I think it's a good company, just the wrong recruiter.

This was a terrible interview experience. The interviewers were cold and unfriendly, with no smiles or friendly small talk. They did zero selling of the company, acting as if they didn't need to, which was surprising given that I was initially interested after seeing their YouTube videos that portrayed a fun, friendly startup. The interviews felt more like interrogations, with questions focused on tools and skills not mentioned on my resume. It was the exact opposite of what I expected, feeling like a dour, miserable place. It was the worst interview I've had in my career.

Worst onsite experience ever, total waste of time. Not a company for you unless you're desperate. I think this company is failing, with good people leaving and the rest overworked. They'll probably go under soon. It was shocking to see a senior engineer, who's been here from the start, constantly on his phone during the interview. It bothered me so much I had to ask him to stop. He did put it away and paid attention after that.
