The process was quite extensive, involving at least 5 phone interviews, followed by a full day of interviews with 6 separate sessions. Throughout, I felt the interactions were positive and more like conversations than stressful interrogations. The majority of the interviews focused on fit and behavioral aspects, with one interview also including some problem-solving elements. My key advice for future candidates is to maintain a friendly demeanor. While company and industry research is generally advisable, I wasn't directly tested on specific knowledge in these areas, only general questions like 'Why Epocrates?' and 'Why healthcare?'. I've heard that the California office might inquire about 'Why technology?' given their self-perception as a tech company, whereas the New Jersey office emphasizes healthcare. I hope this insight is helpful!

Even though I felt I was overqualified, I sent my resume because I thought I could bring value and the job could be beneficial for me. The hiring manager called to set up a phone interview. She seemed new to management, possibly recently promoted. Throughout the call, she repeatedly mentioned I was overqualified. I eventually expressed my frustration, questioning why she proceeded with the interview if she already knew this and suggesting she should have stated if her goal was to practice interviewing. I also mentioned I would be sending this feedback to her CEO so they could provide better management training.

So I talked to two people on the phone, separate days. First was the department manager, Kelly, who was kinda cold and asked basic questions. Then I talked to Becky, who's on the team, and she was nicer and asked things in a more engaging way. After those two phone chats, I had a group interview. I met each person one-on-one, and the manager asked the same exact questions I got before. She seemed kinda stuck up. The whole thing, including 2 tests (one I didn't even know about, on some random software) took over 3 hours. They mentioned paying between $55k-$65k, and I was at the high end. They ended up hiring someone internal to save money and pay less.

I skipped the recruiter stage. First, I had a phone screen with HR to make sure I was a good fit. Then, I met with the director of finance in person. He was a nice guy and answered my questions directly, without being misleading. During that same visit, I had another unannounced meeting with the director of financial reporting. She was nice, but she seemed a bit too controlling about things that weren't really her area. I worry this might lead to unclear job responsibilities down the line.

Epocrates Interview Questions

Quoted word for word from Epocrates interview reports.

What is the alphabetical rank of a given word (a string of capital letters) among all possible letter combinations?

Read reports

Given a set of numbers, describe how they'd stack if the set was folded in half, either left or right. For instance, with 1 2 3 4, a left fold results in 2 1 (top) and 3 4 (bottom). A right fold would yield 4 3 (top) and 1 2 (bottom). Show the steps if we first fold left, then fold left again, starting with 1 2 3 4. Step 1 yields 2 1 3 4, and Step 2 results in 3 2 1 4.
