& Process

The interview process was quite long. It started with a phone interview, then a skills test, and finally an onsite interview. The onsite part went on for several hours. It included a priority skills test, a chat with someone who works there now, a tour of the campus, and then an interview with HR. The HR interview was really invasive; honestly, no other place has ever asked me to go into detail about a family member's medical situation like that before. Even when I tried to steer the conversation back to my skills, the HR person kept asking until I finally said I was looking after a family member for a couple of months between jobs. I really felt like they were trying to figure out if it was maternity leave, but it wasn't. I was super uncomfortable during that part. The rest of the interview wasn't too remarkable though – just standard interview questions, a couple of weird ones, and a lot of talking about the job, work-life balance, and stuff. The HR person didn't really ask much about my actual skills or what I've done overall.

So first I did this online assessment, it had programming, logic, and math stuff, took me a bit over 2 hours. Then I had a 20 minute phone call, super chill, just chatting. Same day they asked me to interview for the Project Manager role too, when I visited campus. The actual on-campus interview was two weeks later. The night before, I had dinner with some current employees, which was really nice and helped me relax. For the PM job, I had to give a quick presentation. Then there was a group case study, I think to see how we lead and work together. It was about planning to hit a deadline. For the Software Tester role, we did a case study and then some questions about how to prioritize tasks and why I'd choose certain actions. The day ended with HR, where they asked about my career goals. They knew I was thinking about grad school, and I feel like that might have hurt my chances.

I applied online and got a call back pretty fast for a phone interview, which was no biggie. Then I had to do a skills assessment, and honestly, I thought I messed it up. About a week later, they invited me for an in-person interview. Epic covered my hotel in Downtown Madison and even set up a dinner with other candidates and current employees, which I totally recommend. The interview kicked off with a software demo. After that, I chatted with a QA person about the job and asked them stuff. Then, I worked through a problem-solving thing with another QA team member; it wasn't super hard but made me think on my feet. To wrap up the day, I had an HR interview, which was pretty standard. They asked how I felt about the job and how the day went, plus some behavioral questions. Two days later, I got an offer for either a Project Manager role or a Software Tester gig. I went with the PM job.
