I got reached out to by a recruiter from LinkedIn and even though I wasn't actively looking, I was curious about the opportunity. It's a salaried role with a good OTE, which is different from my current full commission job. The recruiter did a quick interview to gauge my experience and interest before passing my info to Hotel Engine. They got back to me quickly to set up an interview, and I even had to reschedule the first one due to a scheduling mix-up, which the person setting it up owned up to, which I thought was a good sign of an ethical company. The first interview was a phone call where I learned about the job, expectations, and company culture, and they got a sense of who I am. I was told I'd take an assessment and then move to the next interview if I passed. The assessment included a 50-question test with word problems, vocabulary, and shape sequences, plus a personality test. I passed both and was contacted for the second interview, which was a video call on Microsoft Teams. I felt prepared and explained my sales experience well, but I guess my connection with the interviewer wasn't as strong as the first one. The feedback was that I didn't hold a fluid conversation and they questioned my work ethic, which surprised me. It seems like a great company with a good product and culture, and the people I interacted with were good. They were quick with communication, which was appreciated. I'm disappointed but will keep succeeding in my current role.

I went through 2 steps - a recruiter phone screen and then directly with the Sales Manager. If I had moved forward, there would have been an in-person mock call at their downtown Denver office. The recruiter was really nice and we had a good chat; she'd only been at Engine for a few months. The manager was super new, having been there about a month, but he was a nice guy and could tell me a lot about the company. They're really looking for someone who can close a lot of short sales cycles and make a high volume of outreach calls, something like 50 a day. I couldn't get a clear picture of the commission structure since it's a free platform. They work in the office every day in downtown Denver with not much flexibility, and it seemed like everyone was on one floor. It's clear they're growing fast and probably looking to sell in a couple of years. They offered a 70K base salary. I got the impression there's high turnover, based on the tenure of people I talked to and saw on LinkedIn. It feels like you have to hit your quota or you're out.

The interview process started off solid, but it went downhill fast once I met the hiring manager and VP of Sales. The conversation felt like a waste of time. A lot of the questions didn’t really matter, and they kept going on about “culture” and the “perfect fit,” which honestly just felt like buzzwords. What really stood out was how unprofessional it felt. The hiring manager was on his phone. It set a bad tone right away. There was no talk about coaching, training, or how they actually support reps, just pressure about high expectations and big goals. That’s not exciting; it’s a red flag. Recruiters are AMAZING though.
