Branch Manager
So for this role, there are 4 interviews. First is a 30 min chat with a recruiter to see if your background fits the job. Second, the regional manager wants to chat for about 60 min (it went a bit over) about your experience and how you handle things in relation to the position. You'll talk about specific industry experience and give examples of success in business development and managing operations. Third, you'll talk with the RVP, which is pretty much the same as the regional manager chat, but they will dig deeper into any weak spots identified in the second interview. Make sure you can really detail past successes and failures. Fourth is a 1 hr panel interview at HQ with senior execs. These people are sharp and will try to find your weak spots, so stay calm, stick to your message, and explain things clearly. Be honest with yourself about your weaknesses beforehand and check your ego. It was a good experience, organized well, and timely. The whole thing can take 3-6 weeks depending on your availability. Emser takes this seriously because the role is complex and needs someone who gets the whole operation. Prepare well and you'll do great!
- Tell me about a situation where you had to increase sales/revenue, and walk me through your plan and thinking.
- Describe an operational process you improved and what the results were.
Outside Sales Representative
I applied online and heard back from the internal recruiter. We had a brief 20-minute phone chat, and then she scheduled me for an in-person interview with the Branch and Regional Managers for the Austin branch. The meeting was at 8:30 AM, and honestly, it felt like they weren't quite ready to meet. The Regional Manager mentioned he was only there to talk about company culture, but I left still fuzzy on what that actually is. The Branch Manager seemed alright and professional, asking more typical interview questions. They kicked things off by saying it would be a relaxed interview, maybe unlike any other I'd had, which sounded promising! But, it turned out to be pretty standard. The Regional Manager kept bringing up wanting "Big Daddy" accounts (like 3 or 4 times), making me wonder if they don't currently have those? I walked away knowing it wasn't the right fit, not due to qualifications, but because I don't think I align with their culture, whatever that may be. They were nice people, though. I had to reach out to the recruiter to find out I didn't get the job.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded expectations for a client?
- What new business accounts did you secure in your previous role?
Branch Manager
The Corporate Recruiter reached out after finding my resume online. We had our initial interview, which was professional yet friendly. Later, I met with the Regional Manager and a Company Executive who were in town for a meeting. This second interview went into more detail, and it felt like they were genuinely trying to see if it was a good fit for everyone involved. It was a good, professional experience.
- Can you tell me about your previous roles and responsibilities?
- What is your experience within this industry?
- Can you describe your background in both sales and operations?
Sales Account Manager
It was a series of 2 to 3 interviews and they were quick to make an offer, though I understand this is not the norm. They were thorough and followed up on my references. Emser has a "slow to hire, quick to fire" mentality. I, personally, don't think this is a defect. Just because a person doesn't flourish at one company, doesn't mean they're not a great fit for another.
- I was asked some fundamental questions that I remember from "practice" interview in college that honestly stumped me as I hadn't been asked them since.
