First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Emma.
Software Engineer Intern
First, you'll do a cognitive and behavioral assessment to check your abilities and traits. Then, there's a 30-minute video call with a tech recruiter where you'll chat about your background, CV, and your story. Finally, a 60-minute interview with two Engineering Managers: the first part is a chat about you, your motivations, and your software engineering passion, and the second part is a technical assessment with basic JavaScript questions.
- Could you explain the difference between `let` and `const`?
- What's the way to declare a function?
- What are promises and how would you go about creating one?
Product Development Engineer
I initially did a test with 50 questions, then had a 30-minute recruiter chat. It felt rushed, and I didn't get to fully explain my experience or career goals. The intro was brief, followed by some challenging logic and math questions. The recruiter was pleasant, though. A week later, I got an email about 'Recruiting Friday,' but they first checked if I was okay with their salary budget, which was lower than I expected, but I proceeded. The final stage was the hardest part. Recruiting Friday lasted from 2 PM to 6 PM, involving three interviews with people from different teams. I felt exhausted by the end. Some interviewers repeated questions and presented many scenarios to gauge my thought process. It was also odd when I asked about expectations for the role in the short and medium term, and they seemed unsure, passing the question around. Again, I didn't feel I had enough time to discuss my current work or my reasons for applying to Emma. After these three draining interviews, I got a call the following week saying I was a finalist but wouldn't be moving forward. They cited needing someone more senior, which confused me as they'd previously emphasized wanting young, innovative hires who they could train. They never mentioned it was a senior role, and if they had, I wouldn't have wasted my time. The salary discussed the day before was definitely not for a senior position. It seems they either don't know their needs or are looking for a senior at a junior salary, without informing candidates. Both scenarios seem poorly managed. Upon reflection, I'm relieved not to have joined.
- Can you present some cases to understand your thinking process?
- What are your logical and mathematical skills?
- What do you expect from this position?
Software Engineer
I applied for a senior frontend developer position at Emma. While everyone I met was super friendly and supportive, the team leaders at Emma were particularly great at explaining things and making the process feel really open. The hiring process itself felt a bit drawn out with several steps that seemed a bit much. Also, there was some confusion because the job ad said 'senior candidate' but then before the last step, they mentioned the role wasn't actually senior, which was a bit unclear about what they were looking for.
