Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Emma.
Business Development Manager
It started with an online abilities test, then a 1-on-1 with an employee. After that was recruitment day which included a company presentation and 2-3 interviews. I had one more interview before I was officially hired. The first interview is meant to see if the candidate is a good fit for the company, though I've heard that can vary. Recruitment day was a full afternoon, so I had to take the day off. It involved 2 interviews with at least one team member in one of them, and a third interview if the first two went well. During recruitment day, they presented hypothetical scenarios like 'how would you test a product?' or 'if you could choose between partnering with brand X or Y to enter a new market in country Z, which one would you choose and why?'. They also included brain teasers, ranging from simple math problems like 'what's 235 divided by 8?' to classic weighing problems. I prepared by looking up common brain teasers online; it's more about the process than the answer.
- How would you approach testing a product?
- What is the result of 235 divided by 8?
- Given a choice between partnering with brand X or brand Y to enter a new market in country Z, which would you select and justify your reasoning?
Business Development Associate
I applied for a marketing role, but they also offered me a chance to interview for a Business Development position. The interview process was well-organized and went quite well overall. Unfortunately, I didn't make it past the final round because I didn't have a strong enough understanding of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).
- Take an intelligence small test
- What makes you want to work for this company?
- How do you approach working with KOLs?
Business Development Intern
I applied in January and didn't hear back for a month, which is way longer than their stated 1-2 weeks reply time. I ended up having to contact HR myself on LinkedIn. They said it was because I didn't have a certain language qualification mentioned in the job description, even though I addressed that in my cover letter, which they apparently didn't read. After that, I had the first interview with HR. The second interview with the business development manager and marketing manager was really quick and intense. They cut me off sometimes when I was talking and told me to move on, which I thought was pretty rude. They also sometimes asked surprising questions, like 'Give me a reason why we should not hire you?'. And during the case study, I noticed a simple calculation error in their question that they hadn't spotted.
- For the first interview, there were many questions about my personality and a case study involving a fictional market index analysis, asking how Emma should enter the market.
- The second interview included similar personality questions from the first round, a case study comparing pre-discount sales versus discount sales, and a deductive question to estimate market size in a specific region based on factors like population and buying habits.
