Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Emergent Software.
Software Architect
When it comes to tech interviews, Emergent is the benchmark. Everything is laid out on the careers page from their website. Online application & assessment, initial interview with technical recruiter, at-home coding challenge, technical interview with the team. This is a great way to gauge a candidate and know that everyone who works here has met the same expectation to be an excellent candidate. Interviewing is not a perfect science, but this experience has been wonderful, low pressure, and actually a great way to understand someone's ability.
- When designing a multi-tenant database schema, what important factors would you consider?
Software Architect
It was a really good interview process with Emergent. It was smooth and professional. First, there was a recruiter screen. Then, I got a coding challenge to build a simple website for software products with search. After that, I had two technical interviews with a director-level engineer and a senior architect. The talks were focused but also chill, with good technical questions for the role. The team was nice, and it was a really positive experience overall.
- Can you explain the architecture you designed for the coding challenge and the reasons behind your choices?
Software Architect
I had to do an online assessment and a quick coding challenge with Test Gorilla, and it felt like I was being watched constantly by the webcam. I couldn't explain my thinking or ask questions if something was unclear. It didn't really check if I could do the job based on the description. It was just 3 logic puzzles and a coding challenge that was easy to find online. Honestly, it was a pretty uninspired and off-putting way to recruit.
- There were 4 timed sections. The first was logic puzzles.
- The second and third were spatial reasoning puzzles.
- The final section was a coding challenge where I had to compare two version strings, for example, '2.0.1' is greater than '2.0.0'.
