This was my first time writing a review, hoping it adds weight. It was a bad experience. I'm a seasoned Grant Writer and did well on the initial assessment. The first interview went well too. Then they asked me to do a 90-minute financial assessment and another writing assessment. I thought it was a bit strange but did it anyway, as they said it's what Grant Writers do daily. I didn't get the job, and I think it was because of those assessments. You guys, these assessments are not a good reflection of what a Grant Writer should know. The financial assessment had absurd questions, like knowing the difference between a 990 and an Audit, and specifically what info is on the 990 but not the Audit. It's open book, but you need time to find answers, which I didn't have. If you don't have much experience with nonprofit financials, budgets, and accounting, don't waste your time. I spent a lot of time on them and learned a lesson: don't do too much work before getting paid. I wonder if they delete responses or use our work. I had great descriptions and carefully crafted language. Will they use it? I'm embarrassed I spent so much time, but I thought the job might be cool. I'm not afraid of hard work if it pays off. I get that the better candidate wins, but here, the job description didn't match the assessment questions. Expecting a Grant Writer to advise on program and expense structuring based on a quick budget review seems reckless. I hope they aren't running their business this way, giving consulting power to inexperienced people. I think their job titles and descriptions are misleading. I wasn't competing for a Senior Grant Writer, but a Senior Nonprofit Consultant. If you haven't worked as an accountant or Program Manager, don't apply. Hope this saves you time!

  • They asked typical questions. I wish they had set up the interview after the assessments were done. That would have saved me time.

Behavioral Technical

The interview process felt pretty standard compared to other grant writing roles I've applied for. I appreciated learning about the organization's work and their open communication about diversity initiatives. Unfortunately, I interviewed while dealing with some ongoing health issues that I suspect contributed to my rejection. I realized that the fast-paced consulting environment and matrix structure might not be the best fit for someone managing a disability. Some people also mentioned that the salaries offered are quite low for the amount of work required, especially considering the high cost of living in the DC area.

Technical Case Behavioral

First, there was a timed test on general grant knowledge where I had to complete various grant aspects. Then, a written test involved creating a needs assessment and concept paper for actual Elevate clients. Finally, an in-person interview with Alayna and Carla. Alayna's questioning style was quite aggressive and she had an expectant demeanor, while Carla was very friendly and conversational.

I did an internship interview with two people from Operations via Skype. They were both really nice and easy to talk to, which made me feel comfortable and less stressed. The whole thing took about an hour, and it was split evenly between me talking about my past experiences and skills, and them telling me about the company.
