You'll likely hear about openings by word of mouth, as they don't post positions often. The interview involves a panel of friendly engineers who introduce themselves, mention no one has ever been laid off, and explain they need a mechanical engineer with coding skills for a back-end role. You'll feel great about yourself, but then you'll wait for months, staying in touch because the job seems too good to be true. Eventually, they'll inform you they can't hire anyone, which is inconsiderate since they shouldn't interview if they can't hire. This happened to a friend too, so if you interview here and it goes well, push for a firm decision date and don't let them extend it, always having other interviews in progress.

So I had an in-person interview first with the hiring manager and another engineer. We talked about my current job and why I wanted to change industries. They asked some basic power engineering questions from school and then showed me a schematic, asking what I recognized from my studies. After that, I met the whole office team. Then, I had a second interview via Teams with two program managers. They asked about my current role and some interpersonal questions, also probing why I was looking to leave Aerospace for the Power industry. About two weeks later, the hiring manager called with a verbal job offer, asking about my start date so they could work with HR on a written offer. They asked my salary expectations then, which was at the very end of the process. I was told I'd get a written offer in a few days. However, I had to follow up the next week and found out they went with someone else, probably because my salary request was mid-range, not at the bottom. Basically, the whole 5-week interview process wrapped up with them asking my desired salary only upon a verbal offer, and my number was too high so they changed their mind.

This interview process was a bit different than usual. The questions were pretty easygoing and simple, asking for basic explanations of electrical engineering fundamentals. The interview was on a Friday after 5 PM, which wasn't ideal. It took several weeks to get any answer. I reached out to my contact there again but still got no reply. It's generally good practice to let candidates know if they passed or failed, instead of leaving them guessing. It felt very unprofessional.

I was in their main conference room with 2 of the partners and a project manager. They gave me a water and a small presentation about the company. Then they asked me general interviewing questions about my past experience and why I would be a good fit.
