Software Engineer
This interview process was way too long. I started with a screening interview where the person said it would be 'short' and 'fun,' but it was the total opposite. That's probably how they get you to apply. After that, I had a technical round where I had to build Minesweeper, which they somehow thought was fun and relevant. I apparently passed that, and then they had me do a 3-4 hour presentation for a system design round. It felt like they wanted a consultant to create a system design proposal without paying for it, like they wanted free work to solve their problems. Then they called it a 'final' step, but it was actually four parts rolled into one, with like 9-10 people across 6-7 interviews (some had 3 people). The first of these final four was discussing the free work I did for the system design doc. The system design itself was about building a system for clinician-patient communication, requiring APIs, database changes, deployment plans, testing strategies, and SLOs. This last part felt more like business intelligence data gathering than an interview. They asked me to solve their architectural problem for free and also asked a lot of invasive questions about my previous company's business, team structure, how I worked with others, and what tech we used to gain insights into a competitor. The very last interview was super subjective, asking about what I 'like to see' in a project. Honestly, they clearly have no clue how to interview, and it was obvious they just wanted to collect as much info as possible without respecting my time. They never intended to hire me anyway.
- Can you create Minesweeper?
- Can you work on a 3-4 hour long system design proposal?
- Tell us everything about our competitor?
Program Manager
The recruiter found me on LinkedIn for the Sr Program Manager role and we had the first interview. After that, I moved on to interview 2 with the Hiring Manager. They asked me basic questions about my background and experience, given my extensive leadership experience at top companies. The Hiring Manager seemed to talk in circles and was distracted. I sensed they were impressed with my experience, maybe even threatened by my years of leadership experience. The Hiring Manager couldn't answer any questions I had, repeating "I have been here for only 4 months" at least three times. They were unimpressive to talk to, seemed flustered, and lacked composure during my interview. It sounded like someone was distracting them, and it was loud and distracting (perhaps silence your devices for a 30-minute interview?). For the third interview, the Hiring Manager took 3 minutes out of a 20-minute interview to find new questions, which made me feel they were unprepared and left no time for my prepared questions. I was told to email my follow-up questions to the Hiring Manager. I sent a nice thank-you note with my questions via email, but they were ignored, which was very tactless. Yikes Eden Health. The recruiter was friendly though!
- What key metrics do you believe would be significant for our leadership team?
- Can you share your most significant success in cross-functional collaboration?
Operations
My recruiter set up a phone screen shortly after I applied. Unfortunately, she missed our 30-minute call even though it was on both our calendars. While I get that meetings can run late, not letting me know is unprofessional. She only emailed after the scheduled time to say she couldn't get out of her meeting. I had to take time off work for this call, so it felt like they didn't respect my time. We rescheduled for the next week, but again, she called later than planned. She then rushed through rapid-fire questions for 15 minutes that didn't really focus on my experience, mostly asking why I wanted to work there and what I knew about the company.
- What is your understanding of our company?
Product Designer
The process involved a few stages, starting with a phone screen. Then there were one-on-one chats with people from different teams like product managers, engineers, and other designers. There was also a design challenge involved. The interviews felt a bit too formal, like they had a set list of questions, instead of being a casual chat. But, everyone I talked to was smart, really into their work, and nice!
- Can you share an instance where you had a conflict with software engineers and how you handled it?
- Describe your design process.
- What's your design process like?
