A recruiter reached out about the GL Accountant position. I had my first interview with the accounting manager at their office. It was a pleasant conversation. My second interview was at Ecosense Lighting and lasted from about 8 am to 11 or 11:30 am. This involved interviews with several people: the VP of Finance, Accounts Payable, Financial Analyst, Operations Manager, CSR, and HR. It was quite a long process, taking up most of the morning. The interviews gave me a good sense of the company culture and environment. Beyond the job specifics, they helped me understand the expectations and needs of the role, and whether the job and company were a good fit for me.

I got this job by applying online and then going in for an on-site interview. The process included two phone interviews and then a face-to-face panel interview where I met with the heads of different departments. It was actually a pretty good interview experience. My first phone call felt like I'd known them forever and really put me at ease. A few weeks later, they invited me to their home office. Honestly, meeting with 7-10 people sounds intimidating, but it wasn't. Everyone was sharp, asked good questions, was engaging, and super laid-back. I left wanting to join the company even more.

This was an underwhelming phone interview, almost insulting. The interviewer seemed inexperienced and asked questions that barely related to the Senior Manager role. They seemed to be trying hard to make it seem like a tough interview with odd, non-value-added questions, instead of focusing on behavioral aspects critical for a senior manager who influences team culture and drives success or failure. No soft skills were assessed. My advice to HR/management is to have HR or the hiring manager do the screening to ensure fairness and strategic benefit for the company, as an inexperienced screener could wrongly disqualify a candidate.

It started with a recruiter screen by phone, then a hiring manager phone chat. They both really wanted to see if I was a good fit. After those, I got invited for the on-site. During the on-site, I had panel interviews where they dug into my past work and how much technical knowledge I really have. Post on-site, there was a final phone interview with the CEO. The whole thing felt good, and I met a lot of great interviewers.
