First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at EB Games.
Sales Associate
I submitted my resume at the store. First, there was a phone screen with some basic questions. Then, we had a group interview with other people applying, where we answered basic questions about our past experience and got to know each other.
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I applied to EB Games twice. The first time, I waited months for a callback. When they finally called, I was at uni. I called back after class to confirm my interest, but the person sounded confused and said to check back later. The next day, I went into the store, but neither employee knew what I was talking about. They took my info and said I'd get another call. After a week of silence, I went in again, and the same thing happened. This repeated once more before I gave up. I never heard if the position was filled or my application was rejected, just to check back. About a year later, I reapplied. I kept checking in with the manager weekly to see if they'd reviewed my CV. After about a month, I got another callback and scheduled an interview. The interview process at EB is very casual. The manager and I sat in the mall food court. She asked generic questions like when I'd gone above and beyond, about my hobbies, and achievements. Be ready to discuss your interests like Disney, Marvel, Anime, TCG, gaming, and platforms. They hire based on existing product knowledge and vibes since there's not much in-store product training. I've seen managers interview people at the counter during busy times, asking only about availability, car ownership, and a couple of other questions to see if their vibe matched.
- Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for someone.
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What accomplishments are you proud of?
Sales Associate
I interviewed for a spot at a busy downtown Auckland EB Games store along with about ten other people, most of whom were younger than 25. The interviewer stressed that showing your skills is key, not just saying you know a lot about video games, because the customers do too, but they can't do the job. The process involved a group interview, and then a presentation, and if successful, a background check before an offer.
- Tell me about your favorite game.
- What makes for excellent customer service in your opinion?
- Quick pop culture question: Star Trek or Star Wars?
