First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at East Carolina University.
Research Intern
Basically, the interview was a formality with my professor, and he offered me the job. It was quick and easy but still professional. That's how the process mostly went, and that's all I know.
- What would you contribute to the team?
Outreach Specialist
We had three virtual interviews. The first was with the search committee, the second was also with the search committee, and the third was with the whole admissions staff. The first interview was casual, to get to know me. The second was more in-depth, asking about the campus and my past work. The third interview focused on what I would contribute to the role and the team.
- What would you say to a student to encourage them to choose ECU?
Tech Support Analyst
I had a phone interview first. A committee of about 8 people would take turns asking questions. They started with basic HR questions, then asked about my experience and how it relates to the job. Some other questions were mixed in to see how I handle different personalities. Finally, I got to ask my questions. Then I was called back for an in-person interview. This was also a panel of about 8 staff, with representatives from each department asking questions in a round-robin style. More HR-type questions were asked, and it focused more on my personality and the overall experience I could bring to ECU. It could have been intimidating with the committee panel, but the process felt comfortable and put me at ease. It ended with another chance for me to ask questions.
- Why do you believe you are the most suitable candidate for this role?
- Why are you the best candidate for this position?
Assistant Professor
The interview process was pretty standard: first a phone screen, then an in-person interview. It was a bit disappointing because it felt like an internal hire, but they still went through the motions of advertising and bringing people in. The worst part was getting reimbursed for interview expenses, which took about five months. Even after submitting all the required forms and proof, the reimbursement got stuck at every turn. I had to constantly follow up and contact different departments myself. Being a state school, it seemed like nobody took their job seriously and just did the bare minimum. If you care about teaching and hate bureaucracy, I'd avoid this place.
- Considering the university's student population often includes first-generation students from farming backgrounds with limited prior education, how would you address the academic differences among students in your classroom?
