First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Duolingo.
Data Scientist Intern
I did a take-home task first, then I had interviews with employees. The interviews were pretty straightforward. They focused on behavioral aspects, data cleaning, machine learning, and a SQL coding test. There wasn't any probability or stats involved. They seemed more interested in the details of data manipulation compared to other companies. It felt like they were looking for someone with a specific background.
- Tell me about a time you collaborated with a team.
Data Scientist
I received a take-home assignment with a 48-hour deadline, and they suggested I spend 4-6 hours on it. I ended up dedicating much more time and effort, but unfortunately, I was rejected without any feedback. I also spent a lot of time on the cover letter, and I thought my analysis was good. It would have been helpful to get some feedback on how I could improve, given the time I invested.

Data Scientist
First, I had a phone screen with the recruiter. Then, I had a Zoom call with the Hiring Manager where we worked on modeling a business problem. The next step was a virtual onsite with a few people from the Data Science team. This included a welcome video about the company and culture, a presentation of a DS project I had done, a deep dive into the project methods, a behavioral 'culture add' chat, an SQL assessment, and a final chat with the Hiring Manager.
- Can you present a past DS project that you have led?
- What were your reasons for choosing a specific approach for a project, as opposed to other possible methods?
- Show your skills in standard SQL querying, involving joins, ranking, etc.
