First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
Teacher
It was typical, with several interviews. After each one, I got feedback. Then, the feedback went into my overall placement on the list. Each subject specialty teacher then had an opportunity to take names off the list based on their specialty.
- Can you explain your motivations for becoming a teacher?
Support Staff
Before the interview, I was sent some assessments to test my skills with programs like Word, Excel, and Outlook, and also my typing speed. The interview itself involved answering questions from two HR people. They asked me about safety situations, keeping things confidential, and how I'd put their company values into practice.
- What steps would you take to ensure confidentiality in the workplace?
Procurement Supervisor
I had an interview with HR, the Procurement Director, and the Finance Director. It felt very bureaucratic, like a typical government job. They post jobs publicly even if they have an internal candidate, just to show it's open. I was given exactly 30 minutes to answer questions on a computer about a business case. The HR person then printed my answers and took me to the interview room. The first part of the interview was presenting my answers to the panel. The case was about contract termination but had conflicting information about the contract length. I pointed this out, and they seemed surprised. Also, be aware that the company doesn't pay for training or membership dues.
- Describe a situation where you had to manage a difficult employee and explain your approach.
Principal
To be considered, you need to have worked for the Board for at least 5 years, have PQP quals, and a portfolio with your credentials. You'll also need your quals and a religious statement of personal philosophy. A reference from your pastor, Principal, and SO is required. There are informal interviews with the P and SO, and they must sign off before you can proceed to a formal interview with the Board committee (5-6 members). If you don't get selected, you have to wait 5 years before you can apply again, as the process is prescribed and details are online.
- Tell us about your knowledge of the Ministry.
- What can you tell us about your experience with the Board?
- Describe your understanding of expected school practices.
