& Process

First, there was a quick phone call with the manager to chat about your background and why you're interested in the job. Then, a panel interview with myself and two other department folks where we mostly talked about job duties and some behavioral stuff. Finally, they decided on who to hire.

The interview process is pretty quick. It started with a one-hour phone screen, then they had me do some competency tests at home, and finally an in-person interview that covered behavior and technical stuff. Everyone I talked to was really nice. The technical part wasn't too bad, except for one question they admitted was a trick question designed for you to fail. DSS really needs to step up their communication game, though. They told me I'd hear back in a couple of weeks after the interview, but after two weeks with no update, I followed up. They said they'd let me know that same day, but I didn't get their decision until almost another week later. It's not cool to just ignore a candidate, and it's even worse to miss your own deadlines twice.

Since I am an internal candidate, the standard procedure is to have been in my current position for at least a year. However, they made an exception for me because I had recently been promoted while trying to move into this new role. They are sometimes open to flexibility if they find a great candidate. The process includes meeting with the managers of the department I'm applying for in a group setting where general questions are asked. If my background or skills aren't a perfect fit for the job, they ask questions about my past experiences and also present many scenario-based questions to gauge my understanding of the role.

I applied online and heard back in a few days. First, there was a phone screening to talk about my experience and how it fits the role. They also explained what the company does and the main duties and expectations. After that, I had an online test and then a face-to-face interview.
