I applied online for an assistant manager job at Dress Barn and got a call the next day for an interview the day after. I was interviewed at a different city than where I applied. During the interview, I had to fill out another application and give my resume and cover letter again. The store manager explained I was interviewed there because she was interviewing for the district manager. She asked which location I applied for and said I'd be placed there if offered. The interview was an hour long and covered my retail experience, behavioral questions, and the company's daily operations, focusing on specialty versus department store differences. There were no formal questions written down, and it wasn't very professional. After the interview, I was told salary depended on the location. About a week or so later, the district manager called, and we played phone tag. She wanted to meet at the mall, but it was too last minute. A few days later, the store manager where I applied called me in. Again, no formal questions, she just explained the job and the company. I asked about pay and advancement but still no clear answer on pay, only that I'd discuss it with the district manager after her vacation in a week. I haven't heard back in three weeks.

So I went to the store dressed for the interview and met THE manager, not an assistant or a salesperson. This was a chance to sell myself a bit upfront. Make sure not to wear shorts, flip-flops, or inappropriate attire. I filled out an application and was interviewed right then and there. Then they set up a second interview with the DSM. I also took a personality test. So that was 2 interviews total. I was hired as an assistant and then entered their Pros program to develop my career and skills.

I was interviewed for an Assistant Manager position in Hot Springs, AR. The manager seemed prejudiced and questioned my management experience. My application was rejected because I hadn't worked in retail for three years before the interview. Interestingly, two days later, the store hired three young ladies with no prior experience, all of whom were Caucasian. This store had no minority employees, which seems contrary to business practices requiring diversity.
