First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Dogs Trust.
Manager
Man, so many warning signs during this interview. The person interviewing me had no clue what the job was actually about. The assignment they sent me was first for the wrong role. Then they sent one for the right role, but it was full of mistakes. After I finished that, they asked if I was sure I wanted to work there, saying it's pure chaos. The signs were definitely there.
- What makes you want to join our company?
- Are you really sure you want to work here?
Canine Behaviour Officer
It was a Q&A type of interview, sometimes with a practical dog component. They asked a lot of scenario-based questions and also about my previous experience. There was a question about euthanasia too. It was an okay interview, though using the STAR method was a bit tricky at times.
- Can you detail a complex case you handled?
- In what situations is a dog deemed un-rehomeable?
- What attributes do you possess that would be valuable in this role?
Campaign Delivery Manager
My first interview was in person and started with a 10 minute presentation. After that, I was asked a few multi-part questions, mostly asking me to share examples from my past experiences. The presentation itself was about creating a fundraising campaign for dogs that were dying. About a week later, I got a form rejection email from recruiting. The whole experience felt pretty impersonal. Honestly, it felt like they cared way less about the candidate than other places I've interviewed. I even wondered if they were just trying to get free campaign ideas out of us.
- Can you share an instance where you managed a fundraising campaign with a focus on the supporter's journey?
Media Assistant
I applied for a part-time Media Assistant role at the Ballymena Branch. I have 8 years of experience in lens-based media and social media, which I thought was relevant. They emailed 24 hours before the interview saying a practical exercise would be required, and they'd provide the equipment. The interview was going well until the practical task was revealed. After a standard Q&A, I was asked to photograph a dog using their camera and then create a flyer for its adoption on their laptop within 15 minutes using Microsoft Word. This was challenging as I'm used to Macs and professional software like Photoshop. I struggled with the Windows system and editing in Word. I think I was unsuccessful due to this practical attempt, and I'm frustrated because I feel a poorly chosen practical task caused me to miss out on a great role. I plan to ask for feedback.
- Which type of dog would you be if you could choose?
- What skills do you possess that would benefit this position?
- Can you describe how you would manage multiple urgent tasks?
