Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at DLA Piper.
Law Clerk
It was an Assessment day that ran from 8.30 until 4.30 pm, or around that time. There were around 30 people who were selected from all the applicants. We each had an individual schedule for the day, which included three 'assessments'. The first for me was a group assessment, where a group of three of us had to come up with a presentation topic within 5-10 minutes, and present to one of the employees in the room with us. We were likely assessed on communication, presenting ideas and confidence. The second assessment was the interview. Two employees interviewed me. They asked questions such as 'What would you do when you don't know how to do something', 'What are some of your weaknesses' etc. It was relatively conversational as well. The final assessment was an individual task, where we had to review a 15-page booklet based on a particular legal scenario. We then had about 45 minutes to an hour to come up with a solution for this legal issue based on the fake evidence provided such as correspondence, data, and more. The whole process was smooth enough. However, they didn't really give any feedback whatsoever when they called to tell us that we were not successful for the job. To put in that much effort to not have constructive feedback was disappointing.
- What do you do when faced with conflict, and how would you manage it?
Legal Secretary
It was quite a process. Started with a phone screening, then some written tests, followed by a few in-person interviews with the team. I did great and they said I was the best candidate, just needed to finish the background check before starting. That took 3 weeks because of holidays and my international experience. When I followed up, they told me they went with someone else. Super unprofessional for a big firm.
- Tell me about your experience as a Legal Secretary.
Legal Secretary
I applied online and got an email a few days later asking me to interview. The first part is an on-demand digital interview. You have 30 seconds to look at each question, about 8 total, then you record your answer on webcam. After that, there's a really long online competency and skills test that can take up to 3 hours. This test includes live-action tasks in Word, a multiple-choice PowerPoint quiz, a typing test, and some scale questions where you pick what's most like you. There's also a part where you read situations and choose the best answer. It's a really thorough process, which I think is a good thing because it means they only pick the best people. I haven't heard back yet, so fingers crossed!
- Can you share your experience working with teams?
- What led you to apply for this role?
- Why do you believe you are the most suitable candidate for this position?
