First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Discord.
Data Scientist
The interview process had four typical stages and spanned three weeks. It started with a recruiter screen, followed by a hiring manager screen that focused on past projects and highlighted our company values, similar to Discord. Then, there was a 45-minute technical screen involving a basic SQL question and a case study. The process concluded with a full panel onsite, consisting of four interviews: one behavioral, one SQL, one on data science soft skills and case study, and one on data science hard skills and case study.
- For the DS Hard Skills Case Study, please detail a specific product analytic case study.
- In this case study, please demonstrate your analytic methodology.
- Describe your process for hypothesis generation in this case study.
Data Scientist
So the interview started and I went into detail about my ML experience, mentioning the algorithms I'd learned and projects I'd done. They asked about decision trees, and I explained them, but they seemed a bit unsure. I also talked about Python and relevant libraries. The interviewer seemed a bit distracted though, looking at their notes. When asked how I'd approach a data science problem, I outlined a plan focusing on cleaning and EDA, but their questions felt a bit weak, like they were just looking for reassurance. I tried to find out about the team's projects, but got vague answers. I left feeling a bit confused because it felt like the interviewer's own issues got in the way of a good conversation about my skills.
- Can you tell me about your experience with coding, algorithms, and experimentation?
- Tell me about your coding experience, algorithms you know, and how you approach experimentation.
Data Science Manager
I found the job online and then a recruiter reached out. They were really good at explaining the whole process and what to expect and when. Then I had a couple of phone chats with the hiring manager and the head of the Data team to get a feel for the team and the job duties. After we both thought it was a good match, I got a take-home data challenge to do. They looked at it quickly and then invited me for a full day of interviews that were supposed to be on-site. But because of the pandemic, they were all remote video calls over Discord. It wasn't ideal, but totally makes sense right now. It actually gave me a good preview of how I'd be working with people remotely.
- Can you tell me about your people skills?
- What are your thoughts on ethics in management?
- Describe your management philosophy.
