First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Design Laboratory.
Software Engineer
This interview experience was quite unusual. It started with a conversation with the CEO, who seemed approachable. I felt like this part might be easy to manipulate by simply expressing ambition, stating that salary isn't the main concern, and echoing content from a CEO's YouTube video. After the CEO's approval, I proceeded to an interview with a contracting company. A few days later, a DL contact informed me that the contracting company had revised their requirements. This was unexpected, as I thought the requirements would have been finalized before the CEO meeting. I traveled to Redmond for what turned out to be a rather unproductive discussion, and they hadn't even confirmed their requirements beforehand.
- Tell me about your passion.
- What are your life goals?
- What motivates you to join DL?
Privacy Manager
Started with a recruiter chat. Then met the owner. Then had a conversation with the Contract Manager at Microsoft. DLI's part of the process was super simple, they're great at getting you onboard. But the Microsoft side is a total mess. HR at MSFT is just awful and incredibly slow.
- Can you share about your comfort level with seeking assistance when necessary?
- What are your thoughts on admitting you don't know something in front of specialists?
Receptionist
After receiving an email from a Design Lab recruiter, I was asked to complete a short personality quiz and draft some sample emails. These tasks seemed designed to filter out candidates with basic communication issues or who might be a poor personality fit. Following that, I had a standard interview with the Senior Recruiter and the Director of Operations. I really enjoyed talking to both of them, especially the Ops Director, who was very direct, honest, and clear about the company's expectations. This gave me a good understanding of the company culture and what they were looking for. My only disappointment was the lack of follow-up communication after the interview, which I found surprising given they are in the recruiting industry.
- How do you ensure you stay organized?
Consultant
The hiring process was a bit longer than I anticipated, but overall, it wasn't too difficult. It started with a recruiter chat, followed by an interview with the account manager, and then I met with the client. I actually ended up speaking with the customer two times, and the whole thing took about a month.
- What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
