So, back in 2022, I applied for an Administrative Officer IV position at DepEd SOCCSKSARGEN. The whole thing had two main parts: first, a psych exam, and then a panel interview. The psych test was a bit of a letdown, done by some outside group. The mental tests felt really out of place for us here, like asking about Ella Fitzgerald, which most Filipinos wouldn't know. It just didn't feel relevant to our culture. Anyway, about a week later was the panel interview. There were four people, including the boss of the department. I did a presentation and felt pretty good about how I answered their questions; they seemed impressed. But, surprisingly, three of the interviewers, not the department head though, were basically telling me I shouldn't take the job. One straight-up said I'd be better off in a private company because here I'd just be doing small tasks, like calculating salaries. I wasn't really bothered by the tasks, I wanted the stability. Another interviewer asked if I could handle taking orders from someone younger, which was clearly about the department head. I said sure, because, you know, that's how work is. It made me think about how some government interviews feel like just a formality, like the decision was already made. This is just my experience, not saying it's everywhere, but yeah, that's what happened.

The interview was tough and made me think, especially when the school principal asked me questions, but I managed to answer them using my past experiences. They also asked me about handling reluctant students and what I do when students misbehave.

It was a bit much meeting so many new department heads, but the interviewers were really nice and helpful. They started by asking me to give a quick overview of myself and then presented me with some scenarios that they wanted me to answer using the STAR method.

Interviewing at DepEd is tough due to the prevalence of the 'padrino' system, making the process feel uncertain depending on the panelists, who aren't trained for proper interviews. Without a connection, your chances are slim. It's a big gamble with excessive paperwork that makes you question if they even follow document protocols. I've applied to various divisions, and their criteria differ—some have exams, others don't. It's exhausting. I've tried for 7 similar positions without success. Honestly, DepEd is a waste of time.
