First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at DemandTec.
Senior QA Engineer
Had a phone chat with the hiring manager about my background. They had me do an SQL join explanation on a whiteboard, which I wasn't fully prepped for, so I sort of guessed my way through it but got a couple right. I was upfront about guessing but also talked about what I bring to the table. Then I was invited for an onsite interview where I met with the same manager, a QA engineer, a product manager, a build/release engineer, the VP of engineering, and the recruiter. All those meetings went pretty well. A couple were technical, but most were more general and conceptual, with a lot of focus on process. The recruiter then asked about my salary expectations. Later, the recruiter called and said I was a strong candidate. Honestly, I suspect she was just trying to keep me engaged because I never heard back after that, but it was a decent interview process overall, though I would have preferred more direct feedback.
- Can you explain SQL joins?
- How many Wednesdays are there in a year?
Systems Administrator
The first interview was a phone call with two technical staff members. They asked questions that tested my technical skills and also gave me a sense of the work environment and upcoming challenges. I couldn't really get a feel for the company culture over the phone, though. When I came in for the in-person part, I was greeted by an HR person after a bit of a wait. Since we were all short on time (according to the agency recruiter), this delay wasn't a great sign. By the end of the hour, the technical interviewers and their manager still hadn't shown up. I know emergencies happen in this field, but not even trying to make the most of everyone's time is unacceptable.
- How do you organize your automation scripts and libraries?
Software Engineer
I applied online and the recruiter called me the same day. She did a quick technical screening, then the hiring manager sent me a coding test (algorithms). After I sent back my code, I had a phone interview with the hiring manager, who asked pretty tough Java and algorithm questions. I thought I bombed it, but a week later the recruiter called to set up a second phone interview with another engineer. It felt like it dragged on forever (still no in-person interview), with way too many algorithms for a front-end focused role, and it just wasn't the right fit, so I passed.
- Can you implement a 2 D zig-zag array?
Statistician
It began with a phone interview, and then I was invited for an on-site. I met with six different people individually, with each meeting lasting about 45 minutes. Mostly, they asked about my background and what I've done. I was also given a small dataset to work on, analyze, and then present during the interview. The initial part of the analysis involved handling missing data.
- Could you explain what a normal distribution is to someone who doesn't know statistics?
- Can you explain what a normal distribution is to a layperson?
