First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Debenhams.
Customer Assistant
I applied online and got an email the next morning to call them. When I rang, the lady asked if I had time to answer some questions. We discussed my availability, my eligibility to work in the UK, and some general customer service type questions. It was mostly common sense stuff. She said my application would go forward and I'd get an in-store interview, which I booked for the next Saturday. The email instructions were clear: go to a ground floor till point and say you're there for an interview. I wasn't told on the phone if it would be a group or 1:1 interview, but it was both. A group of us sat down, and we went around introducing ourselves. Then, we were told we'd go onto the shop floor to help customers for a bit. This lasted about twenty minutes, and we were told to ask customers questions and if they needed help. (Don't worry, if a customer asked something specific like where to find an item, you could ask the interviewers.) After that, we went back inside for 1:1 interviews. It wasn't scary, just checking availability, and she asked me which department I'd prefer to work in. She also explained how the store generally operates. It was all very casual; the toughest part was the phone interview, and even that didn't feel too hard. I didn't get a job offer, but I wouldn't have been able to work anyway. Good luck to anyone else applying!
- In which department would you be most interested in working?
Customer Assistant
I applied online and after a few days had an easy phone interview. They told me I passed right away and the interviewer gave me some good advice for the next interview, which was in-store. That next interview was a group one. All the employees were really nice and welcoming. We did a couple of group activities. First, we all shared two true things and one lie about ourselves. Then, we walked around the store, picked a product for a certain type of customer, and then tried to sell it to everyone else. After the group interview, I had an individual interview. The interviewer was super friendly and it felt like we were just having a conversation. They asked me some simple personality questions. I got an email the day after saying I got the job.
- What does good customer service mean to you?
Customer Assistant
I applied through a job board and the next day got an email to call them to confirm some details. At the end of the call, they invited me for an interview the next day. I was told to go to a Debenhams counter and say I was there for an interview, and they took me upstairs for a one-on-one chat. They asked me some average interview questions and then offered me the job right at the end.
- What makes you want to join the Christmas temp team?
- What is your definition of good customer service?
- Can you tell me about your key skills and qualities?
