The process began with aptitude tests, which felt more suited for someone new to the country, focusing on grammar and clerical accuracy rather than actual accounting skills. It felt a bit demeaning. Then I met with the owner, Kurken. His office was okay, but his desk was huge, leaving hardly any legroom, which was uncomfortable and seemed like it was on purpose to keep people on edge. He was polite but clearly overbearing, and you couldn't change his mind once he'd decided something. I applied because it was close to home, even though I'd noticed they seemed to advertise for a Controller every year, suggesting high turnover. The current staff also seemed uneasy. I think I convinced him of my qualifications, and we got to salary negotiation, but we couldn't agree. I could tell it wasn't going to be a good work environment, and I'm not looking to work somewhere miserable unless the pay is really high.

I saw the posting on Indeed and they called me back the same day. The first contact was a phone screen where I was asked about my interest in the role. Then, the recruiter spent most of the time talking about the company and didn't let me speak much. He scheduled an in-person interview for the next day. The interview was in their LA office in Eagle Rock. When I got there, I had to fill out a paper application that asked about my experience with software like Excel and Yardi. The interviewer then took me to his office where his business partner was also working. We had a casual conversation for about 20 minutes about my past and future goals. At the end, he offered me the job.

The interview process is very professional and straightforward. You'll complete a few short, quick tests to show what you know about the position. Then, you'll meet the President of the company. They guide you through the whole process from beginning to end.

If the owner finds you on Ziprecruiter or Indeed, they will have you come in to fill out an application and interview with the property supervisor. If the property supervisor recommends you for a second interview, you'll then interview with the owner of the company.
