So I had this interview for a Pre-Sales Engineer role. Started with the hiring manager, a quick chat about me and the job. Then came the technical part, which was challenging but manageable if you did your homework. It involved two coding questions and some Linux stuff in the terminal, mostly related to Datadog. Next up was the Team Lead, focusing on my technical skills and pre-sales background. After that, another call with the Hiring Manager, who said the next step was a presentation on a technical tool I'm comfortable with. I picked a SaaS tool. I had a few prep calls with the Team Lead, and they specifically told me to lean into the sales angle, not the technical details because I'd already proven that. I spent a lot of time on the presentation and then flew to Dublin. Six people were there to watch, some in person, some on video. The presentation was supposed to be an hour, but they unexpectedly told me to take a 15-minute break right before, which they then counted against my presentation time. The feedback was that my presentation wasn't technical enough, despite being told to focus on sales, and that I went over time because of their break. Pretty frustrating after all the effort.

I had a pretty bad experience with Datadog's hiring. I got to the last round for a Solutions role, but then I found out they actually called people I used to work with at my current job to ask about me. This got back to me internally, which put my current job in a tough spot. It felt really unprofessional and raised privacy concerns. Just wanted to give a heads-up to other candidates.

The interview process was pretty much the same as what others have described. I didn't do so great in the final round, which was an in-person day involving a technical part and a couple of behavioral questions. Specifically, I struggled a bit to identify the problem during the technical assessment. The feedback mentioned I was a bit "green." It's a little frustrating because your performance really depends on their specific platform, which you wouldn't know about unless you actively sought it out, but that's how it is.
