Got an initial outreach from the recruiter and then had a first call with Talent Acquisition. They were super professional and laid out the interview steps clearly. The next day, I had a call with the hiring manager, who was really knowledgeable and checked if I'd be a good fit for the role and the company culture. They even suggested other positions I might be a good match for.

Behavioral Technical Case Presentation

I got contacted by a junior recruiter on LinkedIn who suggested I apply and set up a screening call with their senior recruiter. From the get-go, the vibe was off. The senior recruiter was super passive-aggressive, sarcastic, and dismissive. He talked down to me the whole call and said one of my answers was the worst he'd ever heard. For a phone screen, that kind of comment was totally unprofessional and uncalled for. Plus, he's not even a professional in my field to treat me like a pawn. You're a recruiter. No clear steps were ever explained. I wasn't told how to prep, what to expect, or how the process would go. I was later told I should've used the STAR method, even though that was never communicated beforehand, which I told him. He also asked some personal questions about my current job that felt weird and uncomfortable to answer. Even though he acted like I had totally bombed the conversation, the recruiter said he didn't want to fly me out yet and wanted a second opinion just to be sure. He set up another call with the hiring manager to get her thoughts. That call was the only part of the process that felt professional. The hiring manager was respectful and let me talk. She mentioned she'd talk to the recruiter to figure out next steps. Towards the end, she made a big statement that nobody ever leaves Datadog. I just smiled and nodded because I really wanted an offer. I said 'wow, that's amazing to hear,' not because I totally believed it, but because it wasn't the time or place to argue. I know that might have seemed naive or inexperienced, but honestly, who's going to push back on that during an interview? The next day, the recruiter followed up and said the manager liked me, but some of my answers seemed inexperienced. Then he added they wanted to set up a mock situational interview over Zoom before flying me out. This was never mentioned before and felt like a made-up step added at the last minute. The requirements kept changing, and it felt like I was being tested more than evaluated. When I asked about compensation twice, I just got a generic prep guide instead that didn't answer anything I needed to know, which was a red flag. During the first call, comp was rushed so fast I could barely follow. No transparency. One more thing stood out. The sales cycle and deal size they described were way smaller and shorter than what I deal with now. Based on that, I find it hard to believe any account executive in that role could realistically make 90k. It didn't seem scalable or profitable compared to my industry experience. Check the online reviews and trust your gut. All in all, the process felt disorganized, defensive, and poorly managed. The recruiter's energy was confrontational, not cooperative. If a candidate isn't a fit, just say it. If they are, treat them professionally. Sadly, that didn't happen here.

We had a cold call discovery meeting where I was asked questions about myself. It's important to be honest and genuine about your profile and what you are looking for. They shared a lot of good perks about the company and how they work.
