Engineering Manager
I skipped the phone interview and went straight to their downtown LA office. I met with some engineers, the founder, and the president. The founder seemed like all talk, and the president was really arrogant. However, the engineers I met were skilled and friendly, though a couple left the company within a year. I only saw one conference room; there was no office tour. They mentioned I was being considered for multiple roles, which wasn't what I agreed to since I applied for a specific position and level. The whole experience suggested their hardware was basic, with most of the innovation in software. It was a disappointing experience, as I was hoping to find a company in Southern California. I also question the leaders' ethics, but I was impressed with the engineers they managed to hire, albeit temporarily.
- Can you tell me about the specific technologies your current employer uses and your process for selecting them?
- Describe how you would conduct a technology trade-off analysis for a specific technology currently in use at your employer.
Senior Test Engineer
Started with a quick recruiter call, asking about my past jobs and some HR stuff. Then I got hit with a couple of technical questions about my Python skills. Next up was a chat with the Lead engineer where I had to fix some of their old problems and show what I know. After that, I spoke with a Principal Engineer about whether my tech skills would match what they need. Then came the onsite, with 4 more interviews – 3 technical and 1 HR. Finally, the CEO called me for a last talk. All in all, the interview process was pretty cool, tough in a good way, and actually pretty fast considering all the steps. Everyone I met was super nice and easy to talk to.

- Tell me about Python classes.
- What are structures in Python?
Project Manager
I was contacted through LinkedIn by an in house recruiter. I had a phone screen with the recruiter. Next, was a phone interview with the hiring manager. I then went to the office for a panel interview with 5 employees. I then had another phone interview with the hiring manager and a project management consultant. I was then told that the board put everything on hold while they did a strategic review. I enquired a few weeks later and received a reply that the position had been canceled. The company is pre-revenue so things like this are to be expected with a growing company. Everyone I met with was friendly and the interview process was very positive. The recruiter was responsive and kept me in the loop. I have nothing but positive things to say about the company and the people that I met.
- Can you describe a time a project you were managing was failing, and detail how you turned it around into a success?
- How do you approach risk management?
- What project management methodologies do you employ?
Manager
The hiring manager started off really nice and open about the company, but then it got worse. I was asked about my salary expectations several times. My supervisor didn't show for the phone interview even though I made arrangements at my job to attend. When we finally did connect on video, my supervisor had laundry next to him. After I accepted, everything was fine. I took the job because I was interested in the company, but I learned that if HR and supervisors don't show respect early on, it's a bad sign and will be an ongoing issue.
- Do you question the reality of your surroundings?
