I quickly got an invitation for a virtual introductory call via Google Hangout. During the call, I was told I'd hear back the following week about a 4-hour programming task. When I didn't hear anything, I followed up by email. After some time with no response, I called. They first asked about my application status and said I'd hear back that week. This happened three times (email and phone follow-ups) until I gave up. In mid-February 2017, I emailed requesting my application documents be deleted and for confirmation. No response, so I contacted support. They reacted immediately, deleted my documents, and apologized. In early March 2017, I got another email from a VP with a detailed apology and a commitment to avoid such recruiting process issues in the future, which I found very professional.

I spoke with a recruiter. We initially connected via email, and then set up a phone call. The recruiter actually postponed our call three times. During the actual call, they asked about my past work and current projects. They also shared details about the company and left time for my questions. I was then given a take-home assignment. After finishing and submitting it, I waited a full week before reaching out to inquire about its review status. I suspect they hadn't reviewed it until I followed up. They eventually responded, stating they wouldn't be proceeding with my application.

The interview process was pretty relaxed, basically just chats with some senior managers and directors. It felt a bit like an old boys club though. One interviewer seemed to have a personal issue with me, even though we'd never met, which led them to disregard my references. They ended up rescinding the offer at the very end, despite initially agreeing I was the best candidate skill-wise and experience-wise. In hindsight, it doesn't really matter since the company is no longer relevant and the director who interviewed me left soon after.

I got connected with Mesosphere through the a16z talent network. The interview process began with two pretty tough technical phone screens. Then, I interviewed with the security team lead to assess team fit. We realized I might be a better fit for another team working on APIs for DC/OS, so I had one more interview with them before they extended an offer the following day. The team switch did extend the process a bit, but I was able to do my final interview on-site when I was back home in the valley. The office was great and the compensation was very generous. I didn't accept because another company whose projects closely matched my background made me an offer. I'd still recommend Mesosphere.
