Graphic Designer
So I got an email that I need to do this 100 minute design skills test and also record a video of myself. It seems like any graphic designer with some self respect would not do free or trial work, so I'm withdrawing my application. Also, I read some reviews and saw on YouTube that they upload these application video recordings to YouTube. I also read other weird things in the reviews, like they install software on your computer that takes your photo every 9 minutes to make sure you are working. Too weird for me. I’m out! On to the next company to apply for!

Their ridiculous process guarantees that only the most desperate candidates will apply while talented designers will just accept offers elsewhere. After applying, they make you take an online test which consists of laying out a website in 40-60 minutes. as well as making a video of yourself explaining why you would be a good candidate. This is before you actually talk to anyone in person or have the opportunity to get a sense of the culture there to even see if the fit is mutual. The idea of laying out an entire website in 60 minutes (whatever the justification) such as "we just want to see what you can do" is a huge red flag to any experienced designers as to their experience or commitment to the process of good design. Also keep in mind I don't know anything about this company at this point, its culture, salary range or whether we would be a great match for each other. Without these prior steps to develop strong mutual interest its unlikely I would do an unpaid test in order to find out. Experienced designers know unpaid tests are dicey at best and are usually undertaken by inexperienced, less talented designers who feel they don't have an alternative. Not being any of those things I have lots of alternatives so I had to pass.
- could you design a website for us in 60 minutes

The skills tests were fun and engaging, with really clear instructions. The Q&A part was pretty straightforward and the questions weren't too difficult. You get as much time as you need to finish the assignments. I really liked this process and it was a good challenge.
- How would you delegate 75 small projects among yourself and three colleagues?
