Behavioral Technical

The interview process really focuses on softer skills and how you build relationships. If the role involves data analysis, they'll briefly ask about your experience with those tools, and then there's a written exam where you do simple Excel equations.

  • Could you outline your background with data analysis tools?

It was a 60 minute zoom call with 9 to 12 questions, each having 3 to 4 parts, so it felt like 15-20 questions. After MONTHS, they sent a rejection email with no name. For a specialized role, the pay was low considering the requirements like onsite work, weekend events, and unclear responsibilities. It seemed like an entry-level job needing some supervision experience but not too much to avoid overqualification. This is a problem in higher education where ageism is masked as finding "better candidates." They actually want people experienced enough to stay long-term to avoid frequent replacements. The pay was entry-level, so I'm glad it went to someone younger/less experienced. My advice is to keep gaining skills outside of the job. Do your job well and then move on to a better opportunity. These roles often attract people with promises of a good workplace and loving students. Don't fall for that. Always be looking for better. The CSU system is unstable and underpaid.

Presentation Behavioral

The interview process followed the standard academic interview format. Unfortunately, after completing a full day of in-person interviews, I never received a response. I was completely ghosted, even after attempting to follow up multiple times. This was quite disappointing, especially since I was very enthusiastic about the university and the department.

Behavioral Case

The PAL program is all about wanting to help other students. You've got to be good at solving interpersonal conflicts because sometimes students won't get along and will come to you. The interview has a few "what would you do" questions. They'll give you a scenario, maybe a conflict between students, a student who's failing, or a student with a bad home-life, and you have to explain how you'd handle it tactfully. Remember, you're not a tutor; you're guiding students to the answer using the PAL method. You need to be able to act as both a leader and a peer to your students at the same time, which is the tricky part, but if you can do that, you'll nail these questions.

Confirmed questions5 questions
  • Tell me about yourself and your goals, and how the PAL program fits into them.
  • Why do you want to be a part of the PAL program?
  • Imagine a situation with a conflict between students; how would you handle it?
