I got referred by an external recruiter and applied for the senior product manager role. The next day, I had a brief 15-minute HR screening call. They told me there would be three rounds: first with a senior PM, then the head of product, and finally a stakeholder interview with engineering. The first interview with the senior PM happened the very next day. It went well, and the interviewer seemed genuinely interested in my background and assessing my product intuition. The second interview was supposed to be the following Monday, but the recruiter messaged me that morning to reschedule it for two days later. Unfortunately, the interview with the head of product didn't go great; I felt the interviewer was unfocused and not really engaged with my answers, which made me more anxious. A few hours after that interview, I got an email from HR saying I passed and would move on to the next stage, which was a surprise: a written case study due the next Monday. I was taken aback because this hadn't been mentioned before. When I looked at the case study, the instructions seemed rushed, with inconsistent pronouns, suggesting a quick copy-paste. Given the unexpected case study and my less-than-ideal second interview experience, I decided to withdraw my application the following day. After I sent my withdrawal email, the external recruiter texted me. He said the company informed him that if the second interview was the issue, they could arrange for me to report directly to the first interviewer and meet other team members to get a better feel for the company culture. This message confused me, but I stuck to my decision.
