First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Crunchyroll.
Software Engineer
Got a call from a recruiter first, they laid out what the interview process would be like. Then, I had a coding interview where there were 3 problems to solve: one easy, one medium, and one hard. They did mention that it was okay if I didn't solve all of them. After that, I never heard back from them and didn't get any feedback or reason for rejection, which was pretty unprofessional.

I went through 6 interview rounds with Crunchyroll — an HR call, a Karat technical screen, another technical interview, a system design interview, an interview with the VP, and a product interview. Although I appreciated the chance and tried my best, I was pretty disappointed with how it ended. I'm a big anime fan and was really excited to potentially work at Crunchyroll, and I made sure they knew about my passion and skills. My resume shows I have 2 years of experience, but the job posting asked for 5. They still let me continue through all the interviews, only to tell me afterward that I didn't have enough 'exposure.' They also mentioned that there was only one opening, and maybe things would have been different with more roles or if there were mentoring available. They said I seemed like I'd need mentorship, which is fine, everyone starts somewhere. But it felt like that realization could have happened way earlier, in the first couple of rounds, not after six. It's a bummer when companies aren't upfront at the start. Candidates put in a lot of time and effort — preparing, learning, and being genuine. That deserves some respect. I hope Crunchyroll and other companies can be clearer and more intentional in the future. Interviewing should be a two-way street, with transparency and mutual respect.

I got contacted by a recruiter from the company. The entire interview process was smooth. It started with some phone interviews, then a code challenge, followed by an onsite interview in SF which had 5 rounds. They were really organized and sent me a detailed schedule for the onsite, including who I'd meet in each slot and how long each meeting would be. Since I had another offer, they sped things up and got back to me with a decision in just 2 days. The HR team was very responsive and helpful, though it was a bit odd they only used email and didn't provide phone numbers. I had a bit of trouble finding contact numbers, but thankfully one HR person had called me before, so I could find their number from caller ID. Overall, it was a great, professional experience that left a good impression.
