Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cruise.
Product Manager
I applied online and a recruiter reached out because my experience was 'Highly Relevant.' We scheduled a call, and during the interview, they emphasized how relevant my background was and even mentioned potentially up-leveling the role. The recruiter said they'd get back to me the next day to schedule a meeting with the hiring manager. However, a week passed with no response, so I followed up. After two more follow-ups over the next two weeks, the recruiter finally replied. They explained that right after our call, they offered the role to someone else, and they would only reach out to me if that candidate declined, which is why I hadn't heard anything. It's frustrating because recruiters should provide updates, especially when they make definitive statements. Also, when a role is almost filled, it's best to pause hiring from other candidates. It's disrespectful of candidates' time and effort to approach them, have them invest in preparation, and then ghost them or provide updates only after persistent follow-up.

Technical Product Manager
The interview experience was great. The recruiter I worked with was fantastic and really invested in helping me succeed, making them one of the best I've encountered.
- Given the technical nature of the role, most questions will require relevant background knowledge, focusing on product execution and strategy. If you have sufficient industry experience to tackle the problems, they shouldn't be overly difficult.
Technical Product Manager
Started with a 30-min recruiter call, then a 45-min interview with the hiring manager/AI product lead, followed by another 45-min interview with a different AI product lead. I was then set up for a virtual on-site with 5 leaders (eng, data science, product, and TPM). It felt like the product roles were more like TPM roles. The company's product function isn't super clear, which might confuse people applying. The recruiter who first contacted me ghosted all my follow-ups, but luckily a colleague from recruiting stepped in. I thought I was interviewing for a product role but got thrown into an entry-level eng coding interview unexpectedly. Two people from my panel interview canceled last minute, one just 5 minutes before. They scrambled to reschedule, but it never happened, and they just moved on with other candidates. Really unprofessional for such a big company.
