Project Manager
A recruiter reached out about a PM production role. After a quick chat, I had a zoom interview with two PMs. We had a good conversation and they explained their company is in a niche business and growing, so they're open to hiring PMs from different backgrounds and will provide all the training needed. Then, I was invited for an on-site interview and a tour. A week later, I was told I didn't get an offer because I didn't have the specific experience they'd train for. The recruiter called to say he disagreed and apologized for the wasted time.
- Can you tell me about a successful project and your role in achieving its outcomes?
Purchasing Agent
The interview process felt more like an interrogation than a typical interview. It was lengthy, intense, and at times, even aggressive. The entire process lasted over two hours. First, I had a virtual interview with the purchasing manager and senior buyer, which lasted about 45 minutes. Then, I was invited for an in-person interview with the same two individuals, plus the hiring manager, which went for about 1.5 hours. During the in-person part, the hiring manager was really intense and the questioning was non-stop. I felt like I had to justify my answers all the time. It also seemed like they were presenting their own problems and wanted me to come up with solutions right there. This was really different from other interviews, like county interviews, which are usually only about 20 minutes. In the end, I didn't get an offer. I think part of it was that as the interview went on, I got less interested, feeling like the work environment might not be a good fit for me.
- Can you tell me how many purchase orders you used to place weekly?
- And what was the average dollar value of those POs?
- Can you name some of the vendors you purchased from?
Wire Technician
It was a straightforward and relatively quick interview. They gave me a tour of the department and explained their processes. The work appears to be suitable for someone looking for hands-on experience.
- Can you explain how your past experiences align with the requirements of this role?
Production Manager
I had a phone interview with the Operations Manager first, and then went for a face-to-face meeting with the VP and Operations Manager. The in-person interview was about an hour and a half long. I felt pretty relaxed, even though the VP was a bit snarky. They said I'd be working a 5/80 schedule, but that didn't end up being the case.
- Tell me about your management style.
- Describe a situation where you had to deal with angry employees and what you did.
- How do you approach working with male colleagues?
