I liked the idea of doing a real-life project with a demo, but the evaluation was the issue. My project was rejected for silly reasons: they said no demo was given, but I did a perfect demo, just couldn't upload the video due to the 250mb limit, so I linked it from YouTube. For the design doc, it was just a diagram and high-level summary lacking detailed tech implementation, and they didn't explain what was needed in the diagram, just 'make a diagram'. I included all necessary technical details in the ReadMe and Deployment document. They claimed code wasn't submitted per Docker specs, making it impossible to evaluate a deployment or cloud-uploaded codebase. However, I put all submitted code on Github, linked it for the demo, as Github is the standard for code review. It's a technical position, so reviewers should be able to click a link to see the code.

Technical Other

As with other Crossover reviews, the process is claimed to identify the top 1% of candidates. I find it amusingly naive. They really expect people to go through an automated interview process, answering questions similar to those found on shady IQ tests, which often require payment to see results. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but this feels insulting. I question if this method yields anything other than desperate individuals willing to answer countless nonsensical questions just to potentially connect with a human.

The application process was a bit different, it was a "Hiring Marathon" designed for a quick hiring. It's a really comprehensive set of tests covering everything from deep technical stuff to big-picture questions, so you gotta be ready for anything. The whole thing involves some online tests first, and if you pass those, you move on to a remote interview with a hiring manager later on. The marathon changes depending on what tech stack you're going for, like Java, React, .NET, PHP, C++, etc.

  • How would you evaluate an existing project and update it to meet quality benchmarks?
  • What are your top three strengths?
