Data Engineer
First, I had a call with a recruiter where we talked about my background, resume, and why I'm interested in this role. They asked some general behavioral questions and explained what the job involves. It was a professional and friendly chat. After that, I had a more in-depth talk with the team manager. We went over my specific experiences, whether I'd be a good technical and functional fit for the team, and challenges I've faced in past projects. The manager also provided a good overview of how the team is structured, what their goals are, and what they're currently focusing on.
- Can you elaborate on your experience with CI/CD workflows?
- Describe how you would approach optimization scenarios related to CI/CD.
Data Platform Engineer
Had an initial recruiter call where we talked about the company, the role, and some questions about both. Then I interviewed with the hiring manager, and we discussed my background and projects. I also got to ask more questions about the role. Following that, there were two technical interviews focusing on data platform concepts, designs, limitations, and problems. It wasn't about coding, but more about in-depth problem-solving. Lastly, I had two interviews with Product Managers where we covered how I work with non-technical teams and how I've taken ideas and made them a reality.
- Can you explain Data Mesh architecture?
- What are Event Sourcing and CQRS?
Software Engineering Manager
Got a ping on AngelList and things moved fast. I spoke with a bunch of the core people – product, engineering, sales, and the C-suite, including the co-founders. It was obvious they're a smart, experienced bunch who are really into building a solid team and serving their customers. You could tell from the questions and how they talked about what they're building. I especially appreciated how the CTO/hiring manager seemed genuinely invested in my career path and helped me think through my choices leading up to the offer.
- Standard engineering manager questions covering technical and people leadership, coding and system design, and culture.
- Questions about your approach to technical leadership.
- Questions about your approach to people leadership.
Account Executive
First, there was a phone screen. Then, I had a video interview with a hiring manager and another video interview with a senior leader. They all said my experience was unique and they were very positive about moving forward. They really emphasized their company culture and how they value people, which sounded sincere. The last interview was with the founder. It was like a repeat of the first three interviews and went really well, very positive. He said he'd get back to me by the end of the week, but he didn't. I tried to follow up, but never heard back. They talk a lot about culture, but don't show basic professional courtesy. It's disappointing.
- What are you looking for in a new role?
