Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Coupang.
Product Manager
HR reached out initially, and then I had interviews with some senior team members. They had a few openings when I contacted them. A more senior HR person helped me figure out which position best suited my background.
- Can you tell me about your background?
- What is your experience like collaborating with engineers and designers?
- What's the primary factor you consider when thinking about a new role?
Product Manager
This was the worst interview experience I've ever had. The interviewer seemed more interested in belittling my experience than learning about my strengths and weaknesses. The questions were asked in a way that strongly hinted I was incompetent and didn't meet his requirements. He showed little intellectual curiosity in what I had to share, brushing it off as 'standard things' and 'not what he wants to hear'. I hope this is either an extreme outlier of interview experiences at Coupang or some kind of bad-cop strategy to see how I respond under pressure. But a simpler explanation is that I just had an extremely toxic hiring manager.
- What are some common SBI questions you have prepared?
- Did you prepare for the standard SBI questions listed on the website?
Product Manager
The interview process started with a screening call with HR, which wasn't very clear about salary and level. Then, I had a chat with the hiring manager. After that, it was interviews with some VP Product Managers and other peers. The whole thing felt pretty disorganized and all over the place, like nobody really knew what they were doing or what the plan was. Some people I talked to seemed really checked out and uninterested, which made me wonder if this place was for real. Honestly, it was one of the worst interview experiences ever. That negative stuff I heard about the company culture seems to be true – only a few people seem to be doing well, and most of the rest just seem stuck in a rigid, bossy environment, looking unhappy and not really into it.
- Could you share your favorite product that you've developed?
- Can you describe a metric that you were able to grow?
- Can you tell me about a decision you made that was driven by data?
