First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Coppin State University.
Academic Advisor
The hiring process was for a Direct Report Lead role. Each applicant's experience is unique. My first interview was with my direct manager. After that, I had to meet with all the people who would be my peers. I got the sense they were checking if my understanding of the culture and my background would help me connect with students and be a good example for them. I think my resume showed I could do the work, but my personality is what got me the job.
- Are you genuinely passionate about HBCU education?
- Is this a long-term career choice for you, or just a temporary position?
Coordinator of Clinical and Practicum Affairs
I had a really unprofessional interview and selection process. There were two virtual interviews, one with the team and another with the dean. It was weird because only one person out of seven had their camera on, so I was just talking to black screens. After the second interview, they said they'd make their decision before the end of the fiscal year, which was June 30, 2021. That date passed, and I never heard anything. I sent two follow-up emails about the status, and they were both ignored. I'm not mad about not getting picked, but people deserve at least an automated email saying they weren't selected. Someone actually told me to stay away from this institution because they're unprofessional, and they were right.
- Can you tell us something about yourself?
- What kind of experience do you have that's relevant to this role?
Assistant Professor
The interview process and onboarding felt really professional and thorough. They asked about my didactic and clinical experience, with assigned faculty conducting these parts. The faculty interviewers were experienced in faculty selection. The professional atmosphere was consistent throughout the whole experience. This institution is definitely competitive with the best School of Nursing within a College.
- Can you explain your teaching philosophy and any changes you've made to it over time?
Professor
I sent in my application with my resume to HR. Then I sent a new course syllabus to the head of the psychology department and the dean. The dean interviewed me and liked the course I proposed. The course was reviewed and then sent to the Provost and then the President for their signatures if they approved it.
- What are your strategies for using instructional technology to improve student outcomes?
