Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Coolblue.
Frontend Developer
I applied online and got an invitation from HR with a proposed time and video link. I confirmed but then heard nothing back. The interview was strange. They asked a lot about me, including my age, which I found odd. They also asked why I wanted to work there but didn't share much about the company. Towards the end, they asked about my experience with automated testing, which wasn't in the job description. They said they couldn't proceed without more automation testing experience, implying they might want 3-5 years. It seemed like they don't pay much for regular developers, and seniors need a lot of TDD automation experience, and even then, it didn't seem very competitive. I guessed their salary range was 63-90K EUR, possibly with growth into senior roles internally. No bonuses or stock options. They seemed to be hiring for both software and tester roles without stating it in the job ad. It felt like a waste of time.
- What motivated your application and what are your career aspirations in a company like this?
- What are you seeking in a work environment?
- What about our company specifically attracted you?
Senior Frontend Developer
The whole process was a mess. They didn't want to proceed after the soft skills interview, which was also a mess. They always ask questions like, 'Tell us your experience exactly like this/that.' As an interviewee, you're not a robot and don't have to recall experiences perfectly as they expect. They mentioned that as a senior developer, I should explain technical concepts simply to non-technical people. But how can I explain it easily if you have no idea about technology? It's nonsensical and unfair. Instead of making people feel bad, they should give a project or code assignment and let a developer or business analyst discuss it. If Coolblue doesn't address these issues with HR, they'll lose good talent.
- Tell us about your experience in a specific way?
- Explain technical concepts easily to someone non-technical.
- Tell us about your experience like the situation they are asking about?
Frontend Developer
There were several meetings, and each one was with totally different people. Afterwards, I completed a custom Hackerrank online test. Then, I had another meeting with different people. The test itself had some straightforward open-ended questions at the beginning and then some more challenging coding tasks towards the end - definitely look at those first.
- Can you explain what MVC is?
- Describe how prototype inheritance functions.
- What's your current approach to time management?
