First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cook County State's Attorney.
Assistant State Attorney
It was a three step interview process, all on Zoom. The first was a screener interview. The second was with three attorneys, and they each asked different questions. Both interviews were about twenty to thirty minutes.
- Tell me about a time you encountered an ethical dilemma.
Intern
It was a great and informative interview! The interviewers were really nice, and there were two of them and me. They asked interesting questions and let me take my time to answer and think them through. It was a great learning experience, and I got the feeling that the office culture was good there.
- Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker and how you managed the situation.
Assistant State Attorney
You send in your application and then you just wait for weeks before they get back to you. If they decide to call you for an interview, you’ll be interviewed by 3-6 current Assistant State Attorneys all at once. After the interview, you then wait for weeks again to find out if you get a second round interview. They never told me if I got it or not. I tried contacting them multiple times but never heard back. It was really unprofessional.
- Can you describe a situation where you encountered a difficulty and successfully resolved it?
State's Attorney
The interview process is much different than when I went through it. There used to be an emphasis on previous clerking experience with the office. Under the current administration that is almost a disqualification. If you're still looking for a role in the office, focus your interview answers on serving the community through a holistic approach balancing the need for justice for the victims of crime while recognizing the life circumstances that lead offenders to committing the crimes in the first place.
