First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Connells.
Mortgage Consultant
It was a really straightforward, two-stage interview process. The first part was a group session where they talked about the company and then had brief 15-minute chats with three different people. After that, I was invited back for a second interview with one of the regional directors.
- Tell me about your experience in mortgages.
- What makes you want to work in mortgages?
Agent
The interview process took quite a while, and it was mainly about them getting to know me and my resume. They talked about the job and asked for my thoughts on it. I knew another candidate who applied from a previous job and they had a reputation for being somewhat incompetent, so I felt pretty good about my chances. Ultimately, I didn't get the job; the other candidate did. I suspect they charmed their way into it, as it surely wasn't based on merit.

Customer Service Representative
It was interactive, lively and engaging. The interview process was multi faceted. It began with a talk with management members giving a detailed description of the company's structure. We heard from current employees about their personal journeys within the business as well as information on the incentive scheme. Then we had one on one discussions with each of the sales and customer service departments.
- In your own words, what defines excellent customer service?
Trainee Mortgage Advisor
Had a quick phone call first discussing my employment and education history. They asked about my sales experience and how I would sell products and services. Then I had an in-person interview at one of their Kent branches. The interviewer was friendly. They are hiring in multiple branches in Kent, which made sense after reading the reviews. They talked a lot about the initial years being "hard work", and they need someone who won't quit, which suggests high turnover. They mentioned long hours (unpaid) and weekend work every week, which I wouldn't accept. They also focused on current employees' tenure and earnings, trying to hide turnover. The salary they mentioned was much lower than other advisors in the area, especially for the hours. The job spec didn't list salary, but it turned out to be in the "low 20’s", lower than other firms in Kent, and they weren't transparent about it. They need to change their interview style and pay to attract candidates.
- What makes you believe you'd excel in sales?
- What prompted your interest in becoming an Advisor?
