Customer Success Lead
I had a quick phone screening with HR today. It was a pretty basic chat, just to go over the fundamentals. Nothing too tough or out of the ordinary, you know?

Customer Success Manager
The hiring process was all over the place, with 4 stages and 6 different people, and no one could agree on the role, responsibilities, KPIs, or pay. All those bad reviews seemed to be right. I saw red flags at every step but kept going hoping for clear answers from CS Management. It wasn't until the 4th round, after wasting time on their 'training simulation' interview, that I finally got the truth confirming my suspicions. They scheduled interviews around holidays and their timezone, showing no regard for work-life balance, just like the reviews said. They lied about why these new CS roles were open, first saying they were the very first in the region, then one CS leader admitted they had CSMs who left, creating these openings. Their KPIs are unrealistic and they don't even have a CRM to help manage them. You're expected to handle 60-80 accounts (Mid-Market, Enterprise, Strategic), doing a 30-60 minute training meeting weekly for Enterprise/Strategic (at least 30% of the portfolio) and a 30-60 minute 'meaningful interaction' monthly for every account, where only training counts, not emails or shorter calls. Plus, a QBR each quarter for every account. Renewals are a KPI, but they didn't mention most customers are on monthly or quarterly licenses, which makes managing the volume of interactions and short-term contracts tough. When I brought this up, the interviewer got defensive and ended the interview abruptly. Despite a great product for smaller businesses, they don't understand the CSM role. They want someone to do demos and customer service under the 'CSM' title, not build relationships, strategize, or maintain account health because the current model doesn't allow it.
- Can you share some of your previous experiences in a Customer Success Manager role?
Customer Success Manager
It was a really nice and respectful interview process, they didn't try to make it tough. They asked straightforward and honest questions. At no point did they make me feel like my responses were not good enough, and when I struggled with something, they were understanding and didn't rush to judge.
- Can you share an instance from a previous job where you received criticism from your manager, and what that feedback was?
