First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.
Intern
For this program, they asked typical questions about how I handle work and stress, and conflicts. Since the program provides housing, they also asked about my living style and how I manage conflicts with roommates. I answered honestly but professionally, as my interview performance really impacts my placement.
- What is an unpopular opinion you hold, or a situation where you acted against the usual way of doing things?
Development Coordinator
The interview process was really disorganized. I went to the interview, but they forgot about me, and I had to go home in the rain. When we rescheduled, they were late. Then I had a second interview, which I felt I did really well in, and they said they'd let me know about a decision. Two months later, they called to see if I was still interested, and I said yes, but then they never followed up with an offer or anything. I was excited to interview because of their community connections, but their disorganization was really disappointing.
- Can you tell me what percentage of your job involves development versus finance?
Development Coordinator
First, I had a video call with the HR manager and the department Director. Then, I was called in for a second interview with the VP. Things seemed really disorganized because when I arrived for my second interview, they told me the interviewer was sick and asked to reschedule. I was annoyed since I'd already made the trip. After rescheduling, I finally had my second interview. I felt I did great and even suggested ways to improve their development department. Over the next few months, I sent several thank you emails with no response. Then, three months later, HR called to see if I was still interested. They had raised my hopes and promised a follow-up by the end of the week, but I never heard back. That same week, the job was posted again. I found it really inappropriate and disappointing that they didn't even have the courtesy to tell me they weren't moving forward with my application. They knew I was eager for the role and they let me down. Given this was a respected organization, it felt like a slap in the face, especially after I rearranged my schedule for them. In hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise as it showed me how disorganized they truly were.
- Can you tell me about your experience with Rasier’s Edge?
Congressional Fellow
I applied online and then had a phone interview. Lots of people were on the call: foundation staff, current chiefs of staff, previous fellows, and others. It was convenient not having to travel to DC, but I couldn't really get to know the interviewers over the phone. It was hard to know who was talking unless they said their name.
- What unique skills do you possess that would make you a strong candidate for this fellowship?
