Software Engineer
This contract role had a chance of converting to full time. I applied through LinkedIn and then a recruiter from the contracting agency reached out. We talked about my background, mostly what was already on my LinkedIn. Then, they asked me some basic tech questions, looking for keywords since they weren't technical. I cleared that and moved to the tech interview. It was a 45-minute Teams meeting with a senior dev. They had me solve an easy/medium coding problem. If we had time, we'd discuss unit testing and then wrap up with Q&A.
- Can you explain what a queue is and give a real-world example?
- What would be your approach to designing a simple library system?
- How would you implement a function to shuffle the values in an array of integers by n positions, for example, given int[] = new int {1,2,3,4,5} and int shift = 2, the result should be {3,4,5,1,2}?

The interview process had three rounds of casual, non-technical chats. First, a phone call with the department's VP. Second, a conference video call. Third, a happy hour with the CEO and some team members.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain your interest in this position?

The first three stages went really well and I was excited for the next interview. The final interview was with the owner. He seemed hungover or drunk and wasn't prepared. He asked me the same question I had just answered a few times. He asked how I knew the vp and then asked what my favorite beer was. It's a shame because the recruiter, manager, and team interviews were great and I was eager to learn more about Concord. It ended very poorly.
- What is your favorite beer?
